Since early 2020, Napa and Sonoma Valley have suffered several devastating setbacks including wildfires and COVID-19. Wineries are now coming back with new adventures and ideas to attract wine lovers and adventurous travelers. Due to pandemic regulations, wineries have introduced outstanding outdoor activities and online experiences. Vintners are taking full advantage of their parking lots and sidewalks by adding cottages, fire pits, and music to maintain social distancing rules. Some other options include enjoying wine tastings on a gondola ride or while tastings under the shadow of Mt. St. Helena while enjoying the view of horses grazing. Many wineries are now also offering virtual wine tastings by shipping wine bottles in advance to customers and arranging zoom tastings that allow customers to engage with the vintners.

Updated 12/27/2020 – Everyone wants to know if they can visit Napa Valley or Sonoma during the Covid19 pandemic on Christmas & New Year holidays? Well, the hard truth is that until Jan 9th, 2021, both Napa Valley & Sonoma Counties are in strict Shelter In Place order from the State or California. This means that Wineries are not allowed to do wine tastings indoors or outdoors. They can only provide take out orders which must be consumed offsite. Restaurants have similar restrictions. Spas are completely closed. Hotels, Airbnb, and camping sites, etc are not allowed to take overnight reservations from visitors, they can only host essential workers. Shops and malls are still open but with a strict 20% reduced capacity. Our best advice during this difficult time is to simply not visit Napa Valley & Sonoma so that spikes in Covid cases can be brought down to manageable levels. With everyone’s help, we can quickly get back to normal faster. Below are some helpful links to official visitor’s bureau websites from both Napa Valley & Sonoma County which constantly update the information. These sites will also provide a full list of different types of businesses are partially open with restrictions or fully closed.

Fires caused by lightning in
LNU complex are burning, Visitors will be happy to know that even though there
are fires burning in the mountains, wineries in Napa valley and Sonoma County
are safe because the fires are far from where wineries are located. There is
heavy smoke in the area with the bad air quality but wineries are safe from
fires. We advise people to call the winery they want to visit before coming to
the area.
In the LNU complex, more than
1500 structures have been destroyed, because the fire was running in multiple
directions. According to reports damage caused by fire to outbuildings of
Nichelini Family Winery. In other wineries including Battle Family Vineyards,
Alexander Valley Vineyards and Medlock Vineyards were

According to the Industry experts Tourism will
be the real damage and wineries must have to prepare for it. Aimée Sunseri, the
fifth-generation family winemaker of Nichelini Family Winery said that the
business was already tough because of the Corona pandemic before the fire.
Their tasting room was reopened for outdoor tastings only before it was
completely closed. She is worried about how the things will be in
wintertime. She said that she doesn’t expect things to change much and
may have to shut down business as she can’t keep her employees now.
However tasting rooms are now allowed to reopen
with outdoor tasting, in Napa Valley and Sonoma wineries. Hotels are reopened
and ready to welcome guests now. Outdoors Bars and breweries are allowed.
Guidelines will be strictly followed by the Napa Valley & Sonoma wineries of social distancing
measures and can only hold tastings outdoors.
Napa County is closely
monitoring cases of Covid -19 and impacts of wildfires. We strongly suggest to
all the visitors to call and confirm any reservations or activities before
planning to visit Napa and Sonoma Valley.
Under the new guidelines of Covid -19, it is mandatory to make reservations in advance, before visiting your favorite winery. Wearing a mask until seated and keeping the distance from other groups is mandatory for all outdoors activities. Indoor tastings will remain closed until further notice. For more information please click the link below.
The state’s
wine industry has been hit hard by Covid-19, which not only shut down wineries
to visitors (though, as essential businesses, they are still allowed to produce
wine), but also restaurants and hotels. Many wineries, like Fontanella Family
Winery and St. Supery Estate Vineyards & Winery, have launched virtual
tastings.
Challenges
will remain once the region’s wineries are allowed to reopen. According to Emma
Swain CEO of St. Supery Estate Vineyards is difficult to predict how many
tourists will visit until corona virus vaccine is available.
In early June, hotels,
vacation rentals, bars, restaurants, and wineries in California were able to
begin reopening following the lifting of lockdown measures that were put in
place in mid-March to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
Sonoma County Tourism
is encouraging everyone to follow public health authorities’ recommendations
and to review
the Safe
Travels Promise as a way to
keep our community and visitors safe.
May and
June are the start of Napa Valley’s peak season, when the region typically
attracts an average of 3.8 million visitors. In 2018, they spent more than
$2.23 billion, according to Visit Napa Valley.

vacation rentals, bars, restaurants, and wineries in California were able to
begin reopening following the lifting of lockdown measures that were put in
place in mid-March to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
There are currently
no restrictions on travel to California from within the United States, and all
of the state’s major airports, including Los Angeles International Airport and
San Francisco International Airport, remain open with flights operating.
On June 5, Napa
Valley became the first region in California to announce that it was officially
welcoming back travelers. Hotels, wineries, tasting rooms, and bars in Napa
Valley have been given approval to reopen to guests by the Napa County Public
Health Officer. Restaurants in the popular wine region began to reopen for
indoor and outdoor dining on May 20, along with retail stores.
The majority of hotels
in Napa Valley such as Carneros Resort & Spa, where guests get
their own spacious cottage in a sprawling property surrounding by scenic
vineyards; the hip Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa in one of the region’s most charming towns; Calistoga Ranch for
a truly luxurious escape; Los Alcobas, a chic adults-only retreat steps from St. Helena;
and Meadowood Napa Valley, a
chalet meets five-star resort nestled into a private canyon.
Many of the
region’s restaurants are open as well for either delivery or takeout
and/or for dining inside or outside. A complete list of what’s open and what’s
not appears on the Visit Napa Valley website. Wineries and tasting rooms are open by appointment only,
so call ahead to make a reservation.
Sonoma County
wineries, breweries and distilleries are excited to welcome guests back to
their properties. Reservations are required, so please call ahead to reserve
your experience.
Hotels are following recommendations from state and county health officials to limit the spread of COVID 19. They let the rooms sit for 24 hours after guests leave. Hotel rooms are cleaned by housekeeping staff and empty for another 24 hours. Guest are greeted by hand sanitizing stations and required to do one thing, to have a mask on. If they don’t have one, they are made available in the front lobby. The use of masks and social distancing is mandatory in both in and out doors until seated with your household. It is important to make advanced reservations. Hotels in Napa, which there are more than 100, have reopened or plan to this month. The 132-room DoubleTree, like many other hotels in Napa, also has a spa, fitness center and pool. Those elements of a hotel property remain on lockdown. Everything will have to be packaged individually, and servers will be wearing masks and gloves.
However, Gov. Gavin Newsom again extended those restrictions for indoor seating and bars to close including museums, entertainment centers and theaters.
How is UBER WINE or UBER in Napa Valley? 2020 FIRST-HAND experience
During 2020, are you planning to use UBER WINE or UBER in Napa Valley to visit wineries and are wondering how is the coverage for Uber or Lyft in Napa Valley? Can UBER/Lyft around Napa Valley or is there Uber or Lyft in Napa Valley? Below are some first-hand experiences from riders who used Uber to visit wineries in Napa Valley. Uber is all the rage these days especially in high tourist locations, therefore everyone wants to know How is Uber in Napa Valley? Meanwhile, if you are visiting Napa Valley for the very first time then we HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing an Audio Tour for Napa Valley. This audio tour does an incredible job of educating about Napa Valley via vivid story telling so that everyone in your group has much more richer experience from their visit. You can play it in your car as you drive to Napa Valley or on your smartphone as you visit wineries. It will make your visit to Napa Valley even more memorable as you will learn so much about why Napa Valley is so famous, how to taste wines like a pro (or at least pretend like it), what single event put Napa Valley on the world map, how is wine made, how to read wine labels, how is harvesting done, what is the difference between Champagne & Sparkling wine etc etc.
Our own Uber Napa FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE
First of all, there is no UBER WINE feature enabled in Napa Valley. However, recently again in 2020, our own team at Winery Finder App had an opportunity to test UBER in Napa Valley. We used UBER from Domaine Carneros Winery to get to Downtown Napa. After concluding our Sparkling wine tasting at Domaine Carneros at 12 noon, we decided to have lunch at Morimoto Napa in Downtown Napa on the riverfront. Instead of driving, some of us decided to test Uber, we tapped the app and were pleasantly surprised to see quite a few drivers around our area. We requested one and within 8 minutes an UBER driver showed up. The car was nice & clean, the driver was super friendly and knew his way around. He dropped us off at our destination. The entire UBER Napa cost from Domaine Carneros Winery to Morimoto Napa cost us $14.81. You can also UBER between wineries in Napa Valley, UBER cost to go between wineries will come out to $10 – $30 depending on how close wineries are to each other. Most wineries are very close to each other on Hwy 29 and Silverado Trail. To calculate your Napa Uber cost, here is Uber’s official cost estimator and Lyft’s official cost estimator. Please note, in Califormia as of January 2020, UBER will stop showing exact cost prior to ride. This means, UBER App now only shows approximate cost in Califormia, for example, they show something like, “Your ride will be approximately $25 – $35”.
In our other visits we also tested UBER to visit various other wineries and also took UBER from Napa Valley back to our office in San Francisco, we will write more about this later. We will also write about taking UBER from San Francisco to Napa Valley. Our conclusion is that overall UBER is very dependable and an awesome way to visit wineries in Napa Valley.
– solomentehawaii, a user on TripAdvisor’s Napa Valley Forum answers how is Uber in Napa Valley?
Hello!
I was a little leery about using it in Napa, given the TripAdvisor forum posts, so I wanted to share my experience: it works quite well. We used Uber each day of our trip. We stayed in Yountville. Each morning I would be the DD for one to two wineries for my husband to taste, then we’d have lunch, park the car at the hotel, and I’d join in the tasting. I only have the tolerance to visit 2 wineries. This is one reason Uber was better than having a driver for some minimum of hours, during which I would drink too much.
Limitations of Uber were that I tended to want to stay closer to the hotel, probably for cost, so unlike when we have had a driver, we didn’t venture far up the valley or into the hills. Secondly, you have to know where you want to go next. We did sometimes sit outside a winery calling the next winery to see if we could come by, but if we had been better organized, we might have really planned it out. Wait times fluctuate for uber, and I’d recommend getting to appointments early. Our wait times varied from 3-11 minutes typically, with one time being almost 20 minutes.
On previous trips we have hired a driver and even once did a tour. A driver is less hassle if you want to travel all over, see several wineries, and don’t want to have to deal with the planning.
We use Uber at home ALL the time so there was no learning curve. 60% of our drivers were knowledgeable locals and 40% were from neighboring towns who came in to work for the day. We got dropped by one driver at peak time, I think because he didn’t want to come all the way out to Rutherford, when he was in Napa. We called a second driver, no problem.. Here is another updated post on TripAdvisor about Uber Napa Valley – User named LBishop06
We just returned from Napa and Sonoma and had no problems with Uber. Cell service is spotty in some places on the road but we never had an issue getting service at any of the wineries. The longest he had to wait was 15 minutes, but the average wait was 3-6 minutes. We were also there on a Monday and Tuesday so wait times may be shorter on the weekends if there are more drivers. Here is the most updated post on TripAdvisor about Uber Napa Valley to visit wineries – User named Kmj1980
So I’m sat in Napa (having visited wineries so sorry for typo’s!). We arrived around midday and only have one night so we walked to oxbow market for lunch (totally recommend), then an uber to Robert Mondavi, then to Mumm and on to hotel (embassy suites). In total around $60-65 including being snared in traffic on the way back.
If we were here for the whole day maybe hire a driver but today no problem in time to call, the drivers/service and cost a whole.. Follow this perticular entire discussion on on TripAdvisor Forum for Napa Valley

Sterling Vineyards & Winery Napa Valley Perched 300 feet above the town of Calistoga, Sterling Vineyards offers panoramic views of Napa Valley. An aerial tram carries visitors up the hill to the winery, whose architecture was modeled after that of the Greek island of Mykonos, where Sterling founder Peter Newton once lived. The brilliant white stucco stands out dramatically against the rugged Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges that flank each side of Napa Valley. Mount Saint Helena makes a lovely distant backdrop. The winery’s towers house eight bells from London’s Church of St. Dunstan’s-in-the-East, originally founded in the 10th century. The church was destroyed by fire in 1666, rebuilt, then destroyed again during the bombing of WWII. Each time, new bells were recast from the old metal to give them superior tonal quality. The rich tolling of these ancient bells sounds down through the valley on the quarter hour. Walkways, balconies, and motion-sensitive DVD screens allow guests to take a self-guided tour of Sterling Vineyards’ winemaking facilities. Beautiful outdoor terraces and elegant tasting rooms provide the perfect environment to enjoy exceptional wines while taking in the view. The extraordinary Mediterranean-style architecture, unique aerial tramway, stunning location, historic bells, and attention to visitors make Sterling Vineyards a top destination in Napa Valley.

OUR CONCLUSION:
We think its a pretty good deal/value considering that a lunch or dinner on the Wine Train for just one person is regularly priced at $170 per person if you purchase it directly from Napa Valley Wine Train website – address, prices & schedule. However, with Costco, you get two people to go for $259.99, thats a savings of $80 for two people. Also, with Costco Napa Valley Wine Train Gift Certificate you get Private Seating at no additional cost so that you are not seated with another party (normally its $15/person extra for Private Seating). This means that your Napa Valley Wine Train discount is $40 per person, for two people, thats $80 discount off the Napa Valley Wine Train. And the best part is that if you don’t use it within a year, it reverts back to cash value of $259.99. So yeah, go ahead and grab those certificates and enjoy the Napa Valley like never before. You Can be purchased directly from the following link: Napa Valley Wine Train Costco discount certificate Coupon

Napa Valley weather in May, June, July & August is generally very hot and dry, with blue and sunny skies. So, what should you wear for the Napa Valley weather in May, June, July & August? Well, very light clothing such as t-shirts and shorts or just a shirt and pant will be enough without a need for any jacket or sweater. Keep plenty of ice cold water with you to stay cool because the heat and wine can dehydrate you very quickly. If you purchase any wines then be sure not to keep the bottles in the hot trunk of your car for too many hours because the wine will spoil in high temperature.
